As you can imagine, post-COVID New York City is quite a different world these days. Stores are closing, people are moving out in droves, and we are basically adjusting to a new normal way of life here. (Although, is it really normal?) I personally haven’t been on the subway in almost 6 months and have only been into Manhattan a handful of times, always driving. I live so close yet feel so far.
As NYC is slowly reopening, outdoor dining is allowed, and take-out is in full swing, I thought it would be a great time to update my Dedicated Gluten-Free in New York City list. I personally reached out to every single restaurant on this list either via email or phone. This list has been updated to reflect changes over the past few months. Look for the green diamond on this list for updates.
This is a “live” list which means it can change at any time. I do my best to keep it updated but it is always the responsibility of the celiac consumer to check directly with the restaurants about gluten-free options and preparation.

August 2020 Updates
- One of the bigger losses of the pandemic was the closure of Hu Kitchen in Union Square. This gluten-free and paleo restaurant was a hit and we are sorry to see it go. The good news is you can still buy their chocolate online and in stores throughout the country.
- The change that had most celiac customers in an uproar was the addition of gluten-full bread and pasta to the Little Beet Table menu. This sit-down restaurant is no longer dedicated gluten-free. The fast-casual Little Beet is still totally GF.
- All locations of Inday have added chapati to their dinner menu. While it does sound like they take extra precaution, this list is for dedicated gluten-free only!
The restaurant said, “First I want to let you know that our entire Inday classic menu is still 100% gluten free. The chapathi is a part of our new dinner offering and is the only item on our menu that contains gluten. Most importantly, from the moment that any gluten-containing ingredient arrives in the restaurant, it is handled separately. We store it in a designated container that is stored in an isolated location in the kitchen. Food using this ingredient is prepared in a specified area on a prep table that is thoroughly sanitized before and after each task. Additionally, we’ve scheduled prep time for the chapathi so that it does not overlap with other prep work. And finally, we have a designated cooking vessel dedicated only to cooking chapathi bread.” - NEW: Elisa’s Love Bites (formerly of Brooklyn) just opened a new gluten-free bakery in the East Village. I love seeing someplace actually OPEN during a pandemic and not close or change their menu.
- While not dedicated gluten-free, Bistango on 3rd Avenue has permanently closed. The good news is that Bistango at the Kimberley Hotel is still open and delicious. Their menu is not dedicated GF, but they do a wonderful job with catering to people with celiac disease. I had my wedding rehearsal dinner at this location!
