Gluten-Free at NYC Street Fairs: Broadway French Market

New York City has bustling Greenmarkets in every borough. These markets bring local produce, artisan baked goods, clothing, flowers, and more to the masses. Local farmers and vendors set up early in the morning and sell throughout the day. I have noticed an increase in gluten-free products at these Greenmarkets throughout the city. Please note, many of these products are often baked in a shared facility so be sure to talk to the vendor about their gluten-free production processes!

While not exactly a street fair, these markets usually set up in parks, street plazas, and even bus terminals! There are some year-round markets such as Union Square Greenmarket, but there are others that are only open seasonally. Lucky for us, the seasonal markets are back and bursting with naturally gluten-free produce. Every Greenmarket has its own schedule, so visit GrowNYC to find a market near you with days and hours of operation.

The Broadway French Market is midtown Manhattan’s only open air farmers market and operates every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday between 35th and 36th Streets. This market is conveniently located on my way to work. I love coming up the subway steps and seeing this beautiful market on my morning commute. The fresh produce, beautiful flowers, and smiling vendors are a pleasant way to start the day. Most vendors are just setting up when I am on my way to work, but they are always happy to let you sample some apples or buy their (gluten-free) baked goods.

Recently, I spotted gluten-free baked goods from Meredith’s Bread from Kingston, NY. They have an impressive selection of gluten-free products including bread, muffins, cookies, brownies, scones, and more. The gluten-free muffins are really awesome and a great accompaniment to my morning coffee. I contacted Meredith’s to ask about their production of gluten-free products, they said “We have a separate gluten-free baking facility in our building with it’s own bakers, ingredients, equipment, ovens and cooling/packaging room.” That’s great news from Meredith’s Bread!

Other gluten-free friendly vendors include Mead Orchards and Sarah and Nancy’s Farms, both which sell the beautiful produce you see below.  The best thing about all of those colorful fruits and vegetables is that they are naturally gluten-free!

The Broadway French Market is in a great location. It is just blocks away from the Empire State Building, Macy’s, and Bryant Park. Whether you are looking for a healthy snack or some gluten-free treats, add this Greenmarket (and all of the NYC Greenmarkets) to your NYC itinerary this summer!
