Gluten-Free in NYC

I was born and raised in New York. I grew up 30 miles outside of Manhattan, went to college 90 miles north of the city, and have worked and lived in New York City for more than 16 years. I ran the NYC Celiac Disease Meetup group for more than a decade and grew it to more than 2,000 members since I started organizing events for the group in 2005. I have established some really great gluten-free and Celiac connections in the city and I am the (un)official New York City Gluten-Free Expert.

I am always happy to help you navigate this great city. I’ve put together some great tools that will help you find gluten-free food in New York City.

Gluten-Free friendly reservations with Open Table
I frequently use this tool to make reservations in New York City. You can alert the restaurant ahead of time about your dietary needs which is a nice perk to making your online dining reservations. I’ve also written an article for OpenTable about gluten-free dining tips. You can read the original article here.

Gluten-Free Map of New York City
This map is a labor of love. Restaurants in New York City come and go very quickly. I update this map on a regular basis but please call ahead to confirm the restaurants are still open and that the restaurant is still serving gluten-free food. Please use this list as a guide to gluten-free friendly restaurants in New York City.

This map was updated in April 2022 but only for the 100% gluten-free restaurants and bakeries.

  1. Hello Erin, I found your blog really interesting. I’m italian and I write a blog about my trips around the world glutenfree (www.glutenfreeontheroad.wordpress.com ). My next trip will be USa east coast + canada. I found many interesting information about nyc where I will spend few days (11-12 august).
I already knew some adresses because I’ve already been there. I was wondering if you could help me. I would like to experience a social eating gluten free in nyc . (i.e. http://www.eatwith.com). Do you have some advice?
    Thank you.
In italy I will probably organise some gluten free social eating by my house in the next future.
    Ciao

  2. Thank you so much for all of this information. Honestly you helped me a lot. I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease a month ago, and i am going to New york this month. i have been waiting for this since I was a child, i love new york and it has always been my dream.. But when I was diagnosed i thought i wouldn’t be able to go. it made me feel really sad, but now you are helping not only me but lots of people who feel the same way.. so thank you!! love from Argentina!

  3. Are there any classic NYC places, like Katz’s deli or a pizza joint that has GF options and safe? I’m going to be there for Thanksgiving!

    1. Hi Tara, I suggest Pala Pizza or Keste for pizza. If you are looking for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, try Pappardella. They usually have a Thanksgiving menu. I don’t know of any GF meals at Katz’s deli, but you can try Bloom’s deli for GF sandwiches, french toast, and more! Let me know if you have any other questions.

  4. Hi Erin! I’m from Argentina and I’m traveling to NY next month.I just wanted to say thank you for this amazing blog!! As a celiac, the first thing you think about when planning a trip is about the food and where you will be able to eat and your blog helped me so much! I’m also going to San Francisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, hope that those places also have a lot of options as NY. Thanks again and keep up the good work. I’m sure that there are a lot of people that appreciate it.

    1. Hi Carola, thank you so much for your comments! I hope you have a wonderful trip to NYC. I have more recommendations for you that I haven’t written about yet. In San Francisco, try Pica Pica and Mariposa Baking. In Las Vegas, I had a wonderful meal at Trevi in the Ceasars Hotel. In LA, there is a place called FoNuts that I am dying to go to. Enjoy!

      1. Thanks Erin!! I’ll write down all of those too. I have one question, I was looking at the Target store page for some options and I was wondering if the packages that say ‘GLUTEN FREE’ where are reliable or does it need to say something else? Thanks!

      2. In the US, anything labeled “gluten-free” is supposed to be 20ppm of gluten or less. Many companies test even lower. Also, the labels will usually indicate if the items share a production line with products that also contain allergens. If you are going to Target, there is usually a large selection of Udi’s Gluten Free all in the same freezer case. Other products are sometimes grouped together, but not always. Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s are two other supermarket chains that have a wide variety of gluten-free food and can be found in most cities. Email me if you have any more questions! gfglobetrotter@gmail.com

  5. Hi, I am travelling to New York with my 7 year old who is celiac and a little worried about eating out etc. Can you advise of good family friendly restaurants that cater for kids with celiac? We will be staying in Queens but will be travelling around. Also are the supermarkets generally good with GF breads and cereals?
    Thanks in advance.

  6. My son, Connor, is the young man that stepped on the explosive in Central Park on July 3. He also happens to have celiac disease , and so do I. He is still in Bellevue Hospital. Any recommendations for gluten free near the hospital. In particular a healthy rice & chicken burrito bowl type thing ? We’ve gotten carry out from Bistango , Smac , the beet table , all very good.

    1. WOW! Carol, I am so sorry to hear about your son’s accident. I live in California and it made the news out here. I hope he is recovering.

As far as food, have you tried Dig Inn yet or Local Thyme yet? They both have healthy options similar to The Little Beet. You can also try Inday, which can probably deliver directly to you. Try Postmates.com or GrubHub.com for delivery. I will email you some more ideas.

Para una buena ensalada, ir a The Little Beet. Lo siento por mi pobre español.

  8. Thank you so much for having this site! It is so helpful for planning our upcoming trip to NYC. Do you have a favorite breakfast place that serves pancakes, french toast or other GF options?

    1. For breakfast, try Bloom’s Deli. They have pancakes and french toast and lots of other menu items. Also, Friedman’s has gluten-free chicken and waffles. Hope this helps!

  9. Hi,

I’m in NYC for 10 days, your post has been very helpful thank you. I was outside the city when I first arrived and had glutino fudge covered pretzels, they were delicious, I got them in stop and shop but there isn’t one in Manhattan so I was wondering if you would know where I could get them before I go home? Thanks

  10. Hi its so nice to read about gluten free in nyc,you are doing such a good job with helping us find the right places to eat, my son is 5 years old and has celiac,we are going to nyc for christmas would you recommend any good places to eat for children x

  11. Hi Erin, can not thank you enough for this website! I have won a trip to New York, for losing lots of weight, which I put on when diagnosed coeliac, and am so excited as I have never been to the USA! I have lots of great ideas for healthy food when I am there now thanks to this site, but, the one thing I really want to try is New York Pizza, does such thing exist in a gluten free option?! I really hope so! Thanks again and if you are interested in my journey my site is http://www.thesuperspoonie.blogspot.co.uk and I am on social media as @samsuperspoonie

    1. Hi Sam, congratson the weight loss and winning the trip! For pizza, I suggest Keste or Pie by the Pound, both in Greenwich Village. Have a wonderful trip!

      1. Thank you! I can’t wait! I am now obsessing over your social media pages writing lists of places I can eat! So nice to be going somewhere and knowing I will be safe and won’t go hungry. Thank you.

      2. I just got back from NY last night but didn’t make it to Manhattan. I am going again in April and have Bistango at the Kimberly Hotel and Cosme NYC both on my list. I’ve been to both and they are fantastic. If you want a super special meal to celebrate your prize, try Del Posto. It is an amazing experience. Go for lunch, it’s cheaper.

  12. Erin,
You are amazing. I currently live in NYC, and I didn’t even know about some of these places nor that they are in my neighborhood. So, thank you!!

  13. Hi
Thank you so much for this amazing insight.
My daughter is celiac aged 13. We are visiting NY next week and are looking to find a fantastic steakhouse ( e.g. Luger/ Quality Meats/ Keen’s) which offers not just gf steaks, but critically, has gf fries ( separate uncontaminated frier)

    Can you help?

Also where is best in midtown area for gf pizza? Looking for something classy. Keste?

    Many thanks

    David

  14. Hi Erin, thanks so much for this info. I’m in NYC for 2 weeks soon. The smart hotel in midtown (business trip for OH) we are in informs me that they don’t do “glutton free” breakfasts….:) I don’t need waffles, but toasties or granola with yoghurt and fruit would be great. Do you have any suggestions please, not too far from E50th street as my foot has given in as well so can’t walk far. Otherwise I’ll just buy stuff in supermarkets and fill the hotel room with crumbs!

  15. Thanks a bunch for all your hard work.We are from Uruguay and we are planning to travel to NY with my family . My son who is 8 is celiac and as you can imagine it is hard planning for him to enjoy and for us not to be constantly worring and therefore spoiling our holidays.

  16. I am celiac and going to NY for the first time, this is super helpful! Thank you so much for sharing all of this!

  17. Hi there,
Your listings are wonderful! Do you know of any gluten free restaurants that deliver in Manhattan? Also, which 100% gluten free restaurants are you favorites?
Thank you for all your help!
    Katie

    1. Hi Katie, you should try Seamless and Postmates. Many restaurants in NYC use those website for delivery.

My personal favorites that are 100% gluten-free include Senza Gluten, The Little Beet Table, Little Beet, and Hu Kitchen. My favorite bakery is By the Way Bakery!

      1. Thank you for your response! Senza Gluten looks divine. I would also like to try Gohan, but I noticed that Gohan is no longer on your 100% GF list for June. Does that mean that they no longer 100% GF?
Also, in looking for gluten free bakeries, I came across Krumville in Brooklyn. Have you heard of them or tried them?
Your blog is so helpful, and I really appreciate your advice. I know New York has more options than most, but so many place advertise as GF and are still problematic for celiacs. I look forward to trying the restaurants you mentioned. 🙂

      2. Senza Gluten is good and they have a great menu where everything is 100% GF. As for Gohan, I have tried reaching out after hearing a few people have some problems there. I haven’t been able to confirm.

Krumville is awesome! I actually just won a cake from them the other day and they shipped it to me. It is delicious. They sell their products around the city but don’t have an official store front but I do think you can pick up on certain days.

I am happy to make some other recommendations that aren’t 100% GF but definitely understand celiac disease. Feel free to email me directly. gfglobetrotter@gmail.com
