If you are traveling while living with celiac disease, most likely you have an arsenal of tools in your “celiac toolkit.” Food, apps, wipes, etc. You always need to be prepared with gluten-free food just in case. Snacks and apps are usually my top two travel accessories on every trip.
There are so many smartphone apps out there that try to make your celiac life easier. Apps to scan your food packages, apps to find places to eat, even apps that translate menus for you on the fly. I feel like I have tried them all.
One of the more popular apps in our community is the FindMeGlutenFree app. This app gives you restaurant recommendations based on your destination, category, meal time, and more. I have been using this app for many years both locally, nationally, and even internationally. I use it to search but I also try to always leave a review. It’s a crowd-sourced directory so it is up to us users to keep it relevant.
When looking for a place to eat, I first search on FindMeGlutenFree based on my location and food preferences, read the reviews, and then reach out to the restaurant directly. I want to remind you that the app is just a STARTING POINT when looking for a gluten-free friendly place to eat. No app can replace an actual conversation with a person, but it is a good place to start looking when researching a restaurant or bakery. Remember to always talk to restaurant staff each and every time you dine outside of your home.
There are both free and premium versions of FindMeGlutenFree. I recently upgrade to premium for a few reasons. My top reason is that with PREMIUM there are no in-app ads. This makes a huge difference when searching for something local based on other user recommendations. Premium also includes a “most celiac friendly” filter, and “open now” filter, and “by direction” which lets you find businesses that are in the direction you are heading.
