Gluten-Free Travel Prep for Paris

I have been researching gluten-free in Paris for years now with the hopes of finally traveling there one day. Well, that time has come and I am Gluten-Free Globetrotting off to France later this week. I have a long list of patisseries, épicieries, and markets that I plan on visiting during my trip!

Much of my research has come from gluten-free bloggers, Twitter friends, and even Instagrammers. The information these people have given me have helped me plan where to eat, where to shop, and even where to stay. While France doesn’t seem like the easiest place to be gluten-free, I do feel more confident with this information at my fingertips.

If you are planning a trip to France, I highly recommend following these people! They all have personal experience living, eating, and traveling gluten-free in Paris.

I plan to share my gluten-free travel experiences and maps of Paris when I return. In the meantime, please share any additional gluten-free blogs about Paris with me in the comments section below!

  1. Erin, we went last April and it was much harder than we thought it would be! A great help and contact is Kathleen of glutenfreefamily, who you quote above. Also, talk to Soraya at glutenfreeinparis.com she is Parisian and offers a GF tour and is trying to expand her mostly-french webpage to appeal to english speakers. In any case, double and triple check the ‘buckwheat GF crepes’ – they will often add a bit of regular flour or not use a separate grill….

  3. Thank you for this! I, too, dream of returning to Paris, and have avoided it due to the fear of not being able to eat anything safely. Looking forward to checking out these links, and also to reading your review once you are able to return! Merci!

  4. I live in Paris and can’t wait to read your thoughts on this!
It’s indeed very complex here. Careful as a lot of products labeled gluten free can contain wheat or oats. Stay away from the brand ” gerblé sans gluten” they use “deglutinized wheat” which make celiacs badly sick. Interesting brands are “les recettes de celiane”, “barilla senza glutine” for pasta, “genius gluten free” for bread. I have a gluten free section on my blog with some if those tips. Look for the larks and soencer shops too they have an interesting gluten free range. Now if you can’t cook where you stay, it’s more difficult. There are few really safe gluten free restaurant. Most cooks here have no clue what gluten is and just want to make money of what they believe to be a trend. Never believe a waiter. Careful with sushi as the vinegar used in the rice contains wheat eventhouht it’s called rice vinegar. Now it’s mandatory for restaurants to have a list of allergens including gluten, always ask for it.

    1. Thank you so much Cathy. This is really helpful. I also found “gluten-free wheat starch” or “deglutenized wheat” when I was in the Czech Republic. I was shocked the first time I saw this on the ingredients.

I will look at your blog now. Thank yoU!

      1. I know, it’s terrifying that people here don’t understand it’s a health threat ! I’ve listed a few products and brands here : https://agothtaleofdiyandmakeup.wordpress.com/category/cuisine/sans-gluten-cuisine/ (it’s in french, let me know if you need a translation) . Careful with buckwheat based products (such as crêpes de sarrazin), they are often advertised as gluten-free, but buckwheat here is often cross contaminated. So are lentils and chickpeas.
